DotText2DasBlog now with comments

New release, now with comments.  The commentapi support was staring me right in the face the whole time.

The new release will now move comments over via http.  The comments will not include the original url of the user that posted, and the html that worked in dotText is not allowed in dasBlog, so comments that include HTML will look as you would expect.  Trackbacks also come over, but only with the name of the site, not the url.  I didn't see these things in in the commentrss feed, but honestly I didn't look very hard yet.  Getting this functionality in was enough for this snowy weekend.

I would like to clean up the issues above by either exploring the commentrss in more depth, or adding comment importing from SQL.  Other then that the next few features are up in the air.  I would like to have something that maps my .text urls to dasblog urls, but thats a pretty vertical need.  If others would be interested in this tool expanding to support multiple blogs, speak up and let me know.  Most of the blogs support some sort of interface in, and it should be pretty straightforward to add support for other blogs into this app.

As always, the source is in cvs, and you can also get it from the urls below.  Please let me know if there are any issues.

[WARNING]

When importing entries, please be sure to check the setting for outbound pings.  If you are importing your blog, and do not want outbound trackbacks to be created since they have already been created for these entries, be sure to turn off the feature in dasblog before importing!  Don't send bad trackbacks like I did.

This is an awsome tool. I just love it. I just used to transfer my .Text blog over to dasBlog which is currently running on http://www.sqlprogrammer.org/dasBlog/. I did however have one small problem. When doing the comment fetch when the document that was returned was invalid XML it would cause the whole thing to fail. While this is a nice feature it would be nice if there was a setting to set for that. It would be simple enough to do by simply putting the fetch part in a try .. catch and then having a setting on the form and rethrow if you want to fail. If you want I can do this change and also change it so that it runs as a background thread so that the window can still redraw and not look like a hung app. Just give me a shout if you want me to o those things as it's an awsome tool.

Aaron :

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm glad you found the utility useful.

I can certainly trap for errors there. Right now I have 1 generic error handler for the whole process, but your right, it would be cake to add an additional error handler when grabbing comments.

I have a few changes queued up for the weekend, and will be sure this one is added. If you want, feel free to change it and email it over, unless you want to be a developer on the project in which case you would have write access to the CVS. Just let me know if your interested.

In either case, you should expect to see a fixed version no later then Monday. Thanks

FYI I added it to the wiki. Feel free to add any additional features you would like to see, and I'll see what I can do about incorporating them.

So I did end up transfering my .Text blog over this week. I wish I could figure out how to use the URL rewriting in dasBlog to automatically redirect my frequently searched posts. Have you had any luck in attempting to do it at all? I keep getting an invalid siteConfig error whenever I try. I did however manage to get the Rss.aspx link that .Text uses to redirect to the dasBlog RSS Feed. Which was really nice for the people subscribed to my blog, except for all of the double posts that showed up all of sudden.

Aaron :

I haven't looked at that yet. That is on my list for this weekend as well as a few updates to dottext2dasblog. Scott had posted how he did it, link below.

I'd be curious to know how you redirected the rss link, since I have to do that this weekend too. If you make any ground let me know, and I'll do the same.

Aaron,

I'm VERY interested in finding a tool like this to port both Movable Type **and** blogger.com blogs over to dasBlog. Do you have any suggestions? Also, do you think that both could be done WITHOUT having source-code access. That is, ONLY having access to the blog to be imported via the web?

Finally, one thing I'd like to get in conjunction is HTML comments for dasBlog... and HTML comments imported and preserved. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Do you know of anyone who has successfully modified dasBlog to allow for HTML comments (that is, with a finite number of tags allowed... not "free for all")

I'm trying to convert my blog. The tool looks excellent. However, I get the error message "Root element missing" when I run it. I can verify that both web service pages return valid pages when you point a browser at them. Any help as to what this error means?

Great tool, thanks!

Unfortunately I fought with it on three different machines before I could get it to work. I kept getting this error when I'd click convert:

Request for the permission of type System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 failed.

It seems to be sensitive to what path it's run from, since it finally worked when I dumped the files into the root of my local (non-server) drive.

Thanks again!

The links don't seem to work anymore. Can you fix that?

Cheers.
